History, Nature, and a Piece of Military Past in the Havelland Region
The so-called Rocket Hill near Ketzin, close to the village of Zachow, is a historically significant hill in the Havelland region. Its name stems from its military use during the GDR era. Today, the site combines nature, history, and the charm of a former military base.
During the GDR, the area housed an anti-aircraft battery of the National People's Army (NVA). Anti-aircraft missiles were stationed there, serving to secure the airspace. The site included bunkers, technical facilities, and accommodations for the stationed soldiers.
The Rocket Hill was part of a network of anti-aircraft batteries surrounding Berlin.
NAfter 1990, military use was discontinued. Many buildings were dismantled or fell into disrepair. However, parts of the former infrastructure are still visible on the site today. Over the years, nature and vegetation have increasingly reclaimed the area.
Today, the site is used differently. Some areas are used for agriculture, and projects for sustainable energy production have been developed. At the same time, the Rocket Hill is a popular destination for walkers, photographers, and visitors interested in history.
